The Coast Guard Auxiliary

The Coast Guard Auxiliary was authorized by Congress on June 23, 1939. This act authorized the Coast Guard to use civilian volunteers to promote boating safety on the nation's waterways.

On October 19, 1996 Congress greatly increased the responsibilities and training of the Auxiliary. The intent of Congress was to expand the ability of the Coast Guard to utilize Auxiliary Coast Guard units and members for missions not contemplated in 1939. The Coast Guard Authorization Act increased the scope of the Auxiliary's duties to include any role, mission, or operation that the Commandant of the Coast Guard might envision.

Thus, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, primarily known for its Safe Boating Courses and Vessel Safety Checks, now has greatly increased responsibilities. For more information on the volunteer opportunities available in your area, contact our Personnel Services Officer using the button below:

Vessel Safety Checks

A Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy inspection of your boat (Vessel) to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by State and the Federal regulations. The Vessel Examiner is a trained volunteer and a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. They will also make certain recommendations and discuss certain safety issues to help make you a safer boater.

This is not a boarding or law enforcement issue and citations will NOT be given as a result of the inspection. You will be supplied with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow some of the suggestions given. Vessels that pass will be qualified to display our distinctive VSC decal. Note: This does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be better prepared to make a USCG boarding a more positive encounter.

Safe Boating Courses

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary provides instruction to boaters of all experience levels, from the fundamental to the advanced. Courses are taught by experienced and knowledgeable instructors committed to the highest standards of the U.S. Coast Guard.
